Resources & Support **** It doesn’t take much to realize that life is tough for a lot of people these days. Economic distress piles on top of already tight finances, pre-existing health problems, family disputes, addiction issues and so much more. Each day seems longer and each heartbeat heavier. It’s easy to get trapped in so much darkness. Surely we all know someone who is in need of help, but which direction do we point? Perhaps we have even found ourselves wondering where to turn. Don’t despair! There IS hope – and His name is Jesus. Here is a short list of local organizations who are truly reaching out as Christ’s hands in the world.   Alcoholics Anonymous: Support and guidance for anyone who desires to stop drinking. Thursday evenings at 7:00 at Nevada First Christian Church. Contact: 232-8642. Al-Anon: Support or relatives and friends of alcoholics. Wednesday evenings at 7:00. First Christian Church in Ames. Contact: 233-6312. Alateen: Support for teenage children of alocoholics. Tuesday evenings at 8:00 at Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames. Contact: 233-6312 Angel Food: Quality groceries at low prices. No requirements, very little paperwork. Contact: nevadacommunityafm@yahoo.com or 382-2974. Cancer Support Group: Support for cancer patients and their families. 7:00-8:00 pm the first Thursday of each month for patients and the third Thursday of each month for families. Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. Contact: David, 382-6509 Compassionate Friends: Support for families after the death of a child of any age. 6:30-8:30 pm on the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Story County Medical Center. Food at First: Free dinner every Thursday at 5:30 at Nevada First United Methodist Church. Contact: Methodist Church, 382-6536. Furniture Barn: 126 S Kellogg Ave, Suite 201, Ames - free furniture by appointment, 8a-noon & 1p-4p Monday-Friday only. Call 382-7290. Good Samaritan Fund: Assistance with rent & utilities for those turned down by MICA and Story Co. Community Action. Contact: St. Patrick’s Church, 382-2974. Grief Share: Recovery and support group for those experiencing grief or loss. Monday afternoons from 2:30 – 5:00 at New Hope Christian Church in Marshalltown. Contact New Hope, 641-752-1612. Harmony Clothing Closet: Free clothing, coats, and shoes for those in need in Story County. Located at 1556 Lincolnway in Nevada. Open Saturdays 8 am – noon.
